6 MCU Characters Who Outstayed Their Welcome

Posted on February 14, 2024 by CharlotteM

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) evolves post-Phase 3, it’s time to consider whether some of its original heroes have outstayed their welcome. While some iconic characters like Iron Man and Captain America have seen fitting closures to their arcs, others seem to linger without clear purpose.

  1. Thor Thor, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth, has had a stellar run with the MCU, but his trajectory post-“Love and Thunder” feels uncertain. As the character veers towards comedy, it’s challenging to envision a compelling future for him as a leading hero amidst the emergence of new, dynamic characters.
  2. The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) Despite being one of the original Avengers, the Hulk’s role feels diminished in the wake of new heroes like She-Hulk. Without a standalone movie, the character’s potential remains untapped, leaving fans wanting more development.
  3. Wolverine While Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is beloved, his poignant farewell in “Logan” risks being tarnished by a return in “Deadpool 3.” The character’s closure was emotionally satisfying, and revisiting it may disrupt that peace.
  4. Hawkeye Clint Barton’s journey as Hawkeye has been essential, but with the emergence of new heroes like Kate Bishop, his story may have reached its conclusion. The “Hawkeye” series beautifully transitions to a new generation of heroes, hinting that Hawkeye deserves a peaceful retirement.
  5. Nick Fury Nick Fury, portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson, has served as a catalyst for the Avengers but now feels like a recurring cameo rather than a driving force. While he shouldn’t be written out entirely, his role in the evolving MCU needs reconsideration.
  6. Ant-Man While pivotal in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” Ant-Man’s character growth feels stagnant. Beyond serving as a plot device for the Multiverse, there’s little room for significant development. Cassie Lang’s emergence suggests a passing of the torch to a new generation of heroes like the Young Avengers.

As the MCU continues to expand, it’s essential to retire characters gracefully, allowing room for new narratives and heroes to flourish.
